Lumbering through the flatlands, Apatosaurus consumed vast amounts of vegetation (200 kg or 440 lbs!) daily to satisfy the needs of its immense body.Size was one of the best forms of protection that guarded Apatosaurus from predators. That and the 50-foot tail which may have cracked like a whip, creating a warning sound alerting others in the group of danger.

Daxiatitan is another one of the really big early Cretaceous sauropods from China. It is knownfrom fossils including several neck vertebrae, a shoulder blade, and a thighbone. It was a very large dinosaur, estimated at 23-30 meters (75-98 feet).Like both Euhelopus and Huanghetitan, it had an enormously long neck.

Tyrannosaurus rex

Name means:King of the Tyrant Lizards
Period:late Jurassic - late Cretaceous - 65 million years ago
Where:North America

As the last great carnivore of the Cretaceous Period, Tyrannnosaurusrex was an efficient killer stalking the North American landscape. With a specially strengthened nose structure, it could deliver bone splintering, crushing bites to both prey and combatants, including others of its own species. The strength of the Tyrannosaurus rex's lower jaw could deliver 10,000 newtons of bite force-the equivalent power needed to lift a semi-trailer. Although puny looking, the T-rex forelimb bones exhibit extremely thick cortical bone, indicating that they were developed to withstand heavy loads.

Look up! Overhead a Pterosaur is searching for its dinner. Their hollow lightweight bones allowed Pterosaurs to be active flyers, though these same bones left poor fossil records. Most fossils recovered so far have been from lakeshores and marine environments. In fact, the first Pterosaur described in 1784 was thought to be a marine animal that paddled about using its long front limbs. Pterosaurs were not dinosaurs but reptiles with membranous wings. They did not evolve into birds.

Where:North America

Camarasaurus was a long-necked, long-tailed giant herbivore measuring about 24 to 65 feet (7.5 to 20 m) long, 15 feet (4.6 m) tall at the hips, and weighing up to 20 tons (roughly 28000 kg). It was much smaller than its fellow sauropods. It had a small long head with a blunt snout and spoon-shaped teeth. Its neck and tail were shorter than most other sauropods. It had thick legs with five-toed feet; the inner toe had a long, sharp claw for protection. The front legs were only a bit shorter than its back legs, making its back almost level to the ground. Its name, "chambered lizard," comes from the holes in its vertebrae that decrease its weight.

Where:Texas and Oklahoma in the USA

Dimetrodon was a sail-backed, meat-eating animal that lived during the Permian Period, roughly 280 million year ago, long before the dinosaurs evolved. It was a so-called mammal-like reptile, an ancestor of the mammals.Dimetrodon was about 11.5 feet (3.5 m) long and weighed roughly 550 pounds (250 kg). It had a large sail-like flap of skin along its back, dense with blood vessels. The sail was supported by long, bony spines, each of which grew out of a separate spinal vertebra (a bone in the back). The sail may have been a thermoregulatory structure used to absorb and release heat. The sail may have also been used for mating and dominance rituals, and/or for making it look much larger than it was to predators. Dimetrodon had sharp teeth and clawed feet.

There is only one species, Longisquamainsignis, known from a poorly preserved skeleton and several incomplete fossil impressions from the middle to late Triassic Madygen Formation in Kyrgyzstan. It is known from a type fossil specimen; slab and counterslab and five referred specimens of possible integumentary appendages. All specimens are in the collection of the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

Placerias is an extinct genus of dicynodonts. Placerias belongs to a group of dicynodonts called Kannemeyeriiformes, which was the last known group of dicynodonts before most of dicynodonts went extinct at the end of the Triassic.
